Why BERG-LAY?

Composite materials

First BERG-LAYŽ order for ENI B.V.

To ensure continuous energy supplies, steel pipes with special property combinations are increasingly demanded, e. g.: to gain access to highly corrosive crude oil and natural gas deposits. The necessary pressure resistance and, at the same time, corrosion resistance are mostly not available in one single material at favourable economical conditions, so that composite materials offer the solution.

With BERG-LAY® we have developed a new and efficient method for the integrated manufacture of bimetallic pipe with strong mechanical bond. The manufacturing process was developed using ISO 9001:2000 and ISO 9001:2008 criteria.

Advantages of BERG-LAYŽ

Unlimited range of materials
A virtually unlimited range of materials can be combined (liner materials: 316L, 904, Duplex-SS, Super Duplex-SS, Alloy 625, Alloy 825 and more, Backing steels: X52, X60, X65, X70, grade B and more).

Mechanical grip
Mechanical grip up to physically attainable limits between backing steel and CRA liner.

Uniform chemical composition
Uniform chemical composition throughout the thickness of the liner material (no diffusion processes).

Significantly lower cost
Significantly lower cost due to use of unbonded flat plates instead of metallurgically bonded plates or prefabricated pipes as semi-finished input materials for the manufacturing process (~ 20-40 % lower than hot roll bonding).

Short delivery-time
Short delivery-time due to good availability of plates (~ 3-4 months for plates resulting in ~ 5-6 months for pipes).

Pipe diameters
Pipe diameters available ranging from 10“ to 100“ (273 mm to 2.540 mm), pipe lengths random up to 40 feet.

Various product properties of BERG-LAY® pipe are the subject of intense research with special focus on

- corrosion resistance
- bending behaviour (such as lay bending, etc.)
- effects of thermal impacts on BERG-LAY® pipes
- effects from internal pressure changes
- fatigue testing
